AUD billions - Source frequency: quarterly
Total gross debt of the Australian federal government including Australian Government Securities (bonds), unfunded superannuation liabilities, and other provisions. This is higher than the commonly reported AGS-only figure.
Government debt represents obligations on future taxpayers. The total includes not just bonds on issue but also unfunded public sector pension commitments. Sustainable debt levels are important for fiscal resilience and intergenerational equity.
