Dwelling Commencements: methodology
Category: Housing · Unit: dwellings per quarter · Published quarterly
What this metric measures
Number of new dwellings on which construction started each quarter, nationally and by state.
Why it matters: Commencements are the step between approval and completion, and show whether approved homes are actually being started. Together with completions they track the pipeline that eventually eases pressure on prices and rents.
