Age-Standardised Death Rate — methodology
Category: Health & Wellbeing · Unit: deaths per 1,000 people · Published annual
What this metric measures
Deaths from all causes per 1,000 people, standardised to a fixed age profile so changes reflect health outcomes rather than an ageing population.
Why it matters: Standardising for age is the honest way to read mortality over time: it shows whether Australians are living longer and healthier, not just getting older.
